Acrylics, Inks, Pastels on Canvas, Found Marine Plastic

2022

Camouflage | is an ode to the creative ingenuity that lies below the surface. The series transports the viewer underwater to discover the incredible variety of colors and patterns that the natural world has created in three of its realms: fish, crustaceans, and mollusks.

This project neglects forms to focus on the color palette and the diversity of motifs: enlarging a yellow stripe on a blue fin or a white dot on a black scale, zooming in on the orange line of a red shell, magnifying a purple tentacle or the orange dot on a green muscle. The details on the animals are numerous; the colors are impressive - underwater life is abundant, extraordinary, and unknown.

On each of the tableaus there is a hidden intruder - plastic. It may seem playful to look for an intruder, but in reality these plastic particles carry a weighted message. This foreign body reminds us of the omnipresence of plastic in the marine environment. The small particles integrated into the squares have all been collected on beaches of the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean, or the Mediterranean.

Despite their unaltered form these plastic fragments seamlessly blend into the artwork, underlining the pervasive issue of pollution in marine environments. This addition not only serves as a reminder of environmental concerns but also highlights the inadvertent consumption of contaminants by marine life.
