Ghost nets are fishing nets that have been abandoned, lost, or otherwise discarded in the ocean. These nets, often nearly invisible in the turbulent currents, can be left tangled on reefs or drifting in the open water. Lost at sea these nets keep fishing, entangling fish, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks, seabirds, and other creatures. It is estimated that around 48,000 tons of ghost nets are generated each year; lingering in the oceans their impact on the marine ecosystem is devastating.
